About the Museum of Hagia Sophia in Turkey
In the fourth century, Constantine the Great oversaw construction of the original Hagia Sofia. The original structure does not remain, nor does the second church that stood on the site. Emperor Justinian personally supervised the third and final incarnation of this structure, which builders completed in the year 537. In 1935, Turkey’s first president, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, secularized the building and transformed it into a museum. Workers removed carpets to reveal rococo marble floors and fine art restorers removed white plaster covering mosaics.
